Frequently Asked Questions

The Walsh Act of 1911 takes party politics out of local government. Towns have three or five commissioners, depending on population. Each commissioner directly oversees a municipal department for four years: Department of Public Affairs; Department of Public Safety; Department of Public Works; Department of Parks and Public Property; or Department of Revenue and Finance. In three-member commissions like Collingswood's, the Department of Public Affairs and Public Safety are combined as are the Department of Public Works and Parks and Public Property.

The at-large commission race for the entire board, representing no party affiliation on the ballot, occurs every four years. The board selects a commissioner as mayor. Most commission elections are in May.

The Commissioners function as the legislative authority of the municipality. They are elected at-large in nonpartisan elections to serve concurrent four-year terms. The mayor is selected from among the Commissioners (often the one who received the most votes) and makes most of the key appointments. Together, these three individuals are responsible for managing all aspects of the municipality, from maintaining public infrastructure to balancing the budget.

All regular Commission Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 7pm at the Collingswood Senior Community Center, 30 W. Collings Avenue, second floor.

Meetings are open to the public.
